Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) in Jamshoro is one of the oldest and most respected engineering universities in Sindh. Every year thousands of Intermediate students compete for its BE seats, and the admission system has a few unique features, including a university-run Pre-Admission Test and a district-wise seat allocation. This guide walks you through the whole process in simple steps. For a short profile, see our MUET university page.
A Brief History of MUET
MUET began in 1963 as the Sindh University Engineering College, attached to the University of Sindh. It later became an independent university and took the name Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. Today it is a public sector university with its main campus in Jamshoro, close to Hyderabad, and a second campus named after Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (SZAB) in Khairpur Mir’s. The university also runs the Hyderabad Institute of Arts, Science and Technology (HIAST), which offers BS Computer Science.
Undergraduate Programs Offered
MUET is mainly an engineering university, but it also offers architecture, planning, computer science and business degrees. The main undergraduate programs are:
- BE Civil Engineering
- BE Mechanical Engineering
- BE Electrical Engineering
- BE Electronic Engineering
- BE Chemical Engineering
- BE Computer Systems Engineering
- BE Software Engineering
- BE Telecommunication Engineering
- BE Mechatronic Engineering
- BE Mining Engineering
- BE Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering
- BE Textile Engineering
- BE Industrial Engineering and Management
- BE Biomedical Engineering
- BE Metallurgy and Materials Engineering
- Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch)
- Bachelor of City and Regional Planning (B.CRP)
- BS Computer Science (at HIAST Hyderabad)
- BBA
Not every program is offered at both campuses. The admission notice lists which disciplines are available at Jamshoro and which at SZAB Khairpur, so read it carefully before setting your preferences.
Admission Timeline and Online Registration
MUET usually announces its undergraduate admissions around April each year, earlier than many other universities. This matters because students who are still waiting for their Intermediate Part-II result may be allowed to register and take the test before the final result is out. Always confirm the current year’s dates on the official site, because the schedule can shift.
- Visit ugadmissions.muet.edu.pk and create your account.
- Fill in your academic details and upload the required documents.
- Pay the registration fee using the method mentioned in the notice.
- Download your admit card for the Pre-Admission Test.
- After the result, fill in your program and campus preferences when asked.
General announcements for MUET and other universities are tracked on our admissions page.
The Pre-Admission Test
Unlike universities that rely on NTS or ETEA, MUET conducts its own Pre-Admission Test. The test is designed for pre-engineering students and is based on the Intermediate syllabus. Your test score is an important part of the merit formula, so prepare seriously. Useful preparation habits include:
- Revise FSc Part-I and Part-II Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English from your textbooks.
- Practise multiple-choice questions under a time limit.
- Review the official test pattern in the admission notice, since it is the final word on subjects and marks.
The exact merit weightings between Intermediate marks and the test are stated in the official prospectus; we do not reproduce them here because they can change year to year. Compare different university tests on our entry tests page.
How District-Wise Seats Work
MUET distributes its seats in three layers: district-wise, discipline-wise and category-wise, for both the Jamshoro and SZAB Khairpur campuses. In simple words, each district of Sindh has a fixed share of seats in each discipline. Your domicile district determines which pool you compete in, which is why your domicile certificate is one of the most important documents in the application.
On top of this, there are different fee schemes:
| Scheme | What it means |
|---|---|
| Regular | Standard merit seats at the normal public university fee |
| Self-Finance Scheme (SFS) | Additional seats at a higher fee for students who miss the regular merit |
| University Support Program (USP) | A further category with its own fee level, as defined by the university |
Because merit closes separately for each district and category, a student from a smaller district may get a seat with a slightly different score than a student from Hyderabad or Karachi. This system is designed to give every district fair access to engineering education.
Fee Structure and Financial Help
MUET publishes its fee structure as a document linked from admissions.muet.edu.pk. Fees differ between regular, SFS and USP seats and are revised from time to time, so we recommend downloading the current fee document rather than relying on figures shared on social media. For need-based and merit scholarships, check the university’s financial aid office and the national options on our scholarships page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MUET accept NTS or ETEA scores?
No. MUET conducts its own Pre-Admission Test, and admission is based on that test together with your academic record as described in the official prospectus.
Can students from outside Sindh apply?
Seat allocation is primarily district-wise within Sindh, but the admission notice also lists any reserved or self-finance categories open to other candidates. Read the current notice to see which category fits your domicile.
What is the difference between the Jamshoro and Khairpur campuses?
Jamshoro is the main campus with the widest range of disciplines. The SZAB campus in Khairpur offers a smaller set of programs and serves students from upper Sindh. Seats are allocated separately for each campus.
