NUST NET Guide: Series, Pattern, Registration and Preparation

NUST NET-2027 series dates, venues, computer-based vs paper-based, registration steps, merit basics and a 12-week preparation plan.

The NUST Entry Test (NET) is the gateway to undergraduate programmes at the National University of Sciences and Technology, and it is unusual among Pakistani entry tests because you can sit it several times across a year in numbered series. This guide explains what the official NUST undergraduate admissions portal says about the NET-2027 series, where and how the test is delivered, how registration works, and how to build a preparation plan that uses the multi-series system to your advantage.

Every date and rule below comes from ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk as it stood in October 2026. Figures the portal does not state in plain text, such as the number of MCQs per subject or the fee, are flagged so you can check the official website rather than rely on hearsay.

NET Series for Admission Session 2027

NUST runs four series of NET for each admission year. For NET-2027 the portal lists the following windows. Source: https://ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk.

SeriesRegistration windowTesting window
Series 14 October to 14 November 2026From 17 November 2026 onwards
Series 2December 2026 to January 2027January to February 2027 (Islamabad); March 2027 (Karachi)
Series 3February to March 2027April 2027 (Islamabad)
Series 4April to May 2027June to July 2027 (Islamabad); July 2027 (Karachi)

The portal states that candidates can appear more than once, with the best score considered for admission, but only one attempt per discipline is allowed within a single series. That rule is the foundation of the strategy later in this article.

Test Venues and Delivery Mode

  • H-12 Campus, Islamabad: computer-based test
  • NBC, Quetta: computer-based test
  • DHA City, Karachi: paper-based test
  • APS Jutial, Gilgit: paper-based test
  • Computer-based sessions run in a morning slot (0900 to 1200) and an afternoon slot (1400 to 1700)

Pattern and Syllabus

NUST states that the NET is compiled from HSSC (intermediate) textbooks and advises candidates to consult textbooks of various education boards, because the paper is not tied to one province’s edition. The portal publishes a separate page titled Subjects Included in NET with Weightings for each stream (Engineering, Computing, Business, Social Sciences, Applied Biosciences and others). The exact MCQ count per subject and the test duration are not printed on the main portal page, so open that weightings page and the stream-specific notice before you prepare.

Stream groups you will choose from

  • Engineering and Computing: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Computer Science, English
  • Business and Social Sciences: quantitative, verbal and general knowledge components
  • Applied Biosciences and health programmes: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English

Treat the list above as orientation only; the official weightings page is the authority on which subjects appear and how much each counts.

Registration Walkthrough

  1. Go to ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk and click New Registration for NET if you have never registered for session 2027.
  2. If you already registered for session 2027, log in with your username and password; use Forgot Password if needed.
  3. Choose the series, the test centre and the discipline you want to attempt in that series.
  4. Pay the processing fee by the method shown in your account. The fee is not printed on the main portal page; check the official website.
  5. Download your admit card from your account before the test; the portal has noted a new admit card format, so always use the latest one.
  6. Repeat for a later series if you want another attempt; your best score counts.

How NET Converts Into Merit

NUST publishes a Merit Criteria for UG Admissions page linked from the portal. The merit is a weighted combination of NET, intermediate and matric marks; the exact percentages are on that page. Read our NUST merit calculation guide for a worked example, and how university merit is calculated in Pakistan to compare NUST with other universities.

Preparation Plan

The plan below is built for a student who registers for Series 1 as a diagnostic attempt and targets Series 2 or 3 for the real score. Daily time is three to four hours.

WeekFocusOutput
1Read the official weightings page; take one full mock under timeBaseline score and weak-topic list
2 to 3Mathematics: full Part I and II revision by chapter40 MCQs per day with an error log
4 to 5Physics: concepts, formula sheet, numericals from textbook exercises40 MCQs per day
6Chemistry or Computer Science (or Biology for biosciences)Chapter notes and 40 MCQs per day
7English and intelligence or analytical questions; vocabulary routine20 words and 30 MCQs per day
8Sit Series 1 as a live diagnostic; analyse the score the same weekSeries 1 result
9 to 11Targeted revision of chapters that failed in Series 1; one timed mock every third dayError log shrinking

Exam Day Checklist

  • Printed admit card or roll number slip (plus a second copy on your phone, though you may not be allowed to use the phone inside)
  • Original CNIC, B-Form or the ID document named on your admit card
  • Two or three blue or black ballpoint pens; no calculators or notes unless the admit card says otherwise
  • Reach the centre well before the reporting time printed on your slip
  • Light breakfast and a bottle of water for the waiting area, as food is usually not allowed inside the hall
  • Confirm the exact venue a day earlier; many centres are on large campuses and the block number matters
  • Leave mobile phones, smartwatches and bags with a family member or at the designated counter
  • For a computer-based centre, practise on a screen beforehand so the interface does not slow you down
  • If travelling to Islamabad, Karachi, Quetta or Gilgit, arrive the day before and locate the venue in daylight

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Registering for the same discipline twice in one series; the portal allows only one attempt per discipline per series.
  • Preparing from a single board’s textbook when NUST explicitly advises consulting several boards’ editions.
  • Treating Series 1 as the only chance; students who use the multi-series system calmly usually score higher later.
  • Ignoring the English section in an engineering stream; it is part of the weighted total.
  • Using an old admit card after the portal issued a new one.
  • Waiting for the intermediate result before registering; NET registration opens before most board results.
