The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) runs one of the most structured undergraduate admission systems in Pakistan. Almost everything, from registering for the NUST Entry Test (NET) to accepting a seat, happens through the online portal at ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk. This guide walks you through eligibility, the NET series system, how to register, what the test looks like, the merit stage, and the mistakes that cost students a seat every year. For a wider view of the university itself, read our NUST university profile.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility Basics
NUST admits students from the SSC/HSSC stream (Matric and Intermediate), the O/A Level stream, and DAE holders for selected engineering programs. On its merit criteria page NUST states that more than 60% marks in SSC and HSSC (or equivalent) is mandatory (Source: https://nust.edu.pk/admissions/undergraduates/merit-criteria-for-admission-on-net-basis/). The subject combination you studied at Intermediate decides which disciplines you may sit the NET for: pre-engineering for engineering and computing, pre-medical for applied biosciences, and so on. Exact subject requirements per program change between cycles, so check the official website before registering.
O/A Level candidates must obtain an equivalence certificate from IBCC. Students still in their final A Level year can also apply; NUST notes that such candidates receive 25% weightage on O Level equivalence marks until the final result is available (Source: the same merit criteria page).

The schedule for later series (roughly December to July) is published as tentative and is revised, so treat dates as indicative until you see them on your own dashboard. Fee amounts for registration are listed on a separate processing-fee page on the portal; check the official website for the current figure.
Step-by-Step: Registering for NET
- Open the undergraduate admissions portal and click the new registration link. Returning applicants for the same admission year simply log in.
- Create your account with a working email and mobile number. You will use this login for every series, for admit cards, and for merit lists.
- Fill in personal details exactly as printed on your CNIC/B-Form and result cards. Name spelling mismatches are a frequent cause of rejected forms.
- Enter your SSC and HSSC (or O/A Level) marks and upload the required documents. If your HSSC Part-II result is awaited, use Part-I as instructed by the portal.
- Choose the NET discipline (for example Engineering, Computer Science, Business Studies) that matches your subject stream, then pick a test centre and series.
- Pay the processing fee through the method shown on the portal and keep the receipt.
- Download the admit card from your dashboard once it is released and verify the date, centre and session.
If you want to improve, register again in a later series for the same discipline; NUST’s own page confirms that the best score is considered for admission (Source: https://ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk/).
What Happens on Test Day
In Islamabad the NET is computer-based, so you answer multiple-choice questions on a screen, with a timer visible throughout. The paper is built from Intermediate textbooks of the various boards, which is why NUST advises consulting textbooks from more than one board. Arrive early with your admit card and original CNIC/B-Form. Electronic devices are not allowed inside the hall. The section split and number of questions differ by discipline; the official NET pattern for each discipline is published on the portal, and our NUST entry test (NET) page summarises it.
From Score to Seat: The Merit Stage
After the final series closes, NUST generates an aggregate for every applicant. For NET-based admission the formula is 75% NET, 10% SSC and 15% HSSC (Source: https://nust.edu.pk/admissions/undergraduates/merit-criteria-for-admission-on-net-basis/). Our NUST Merit Calculation Guide — NET, Matric & Intermediate shows a worked example. Applicants list program preferences, and merit lists are released in rounds; each round offers seats to the next candidates when earlier offers lapse. Accepting an offer normally requires paying dues by a deadline printed on the offer. Missing that deadline forfeits the seat.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Registering for a discipline that does not match your Intermediate subject group.
- Waiting for the last series only; a later series leaves no room for a retake if you fall ill.
- Ignoring the dashboard. Objections, admit cards and offers all appear there first.
- Uploading blurred documents or a photo that does not meet the stated specifications.
- Confusing a tentative date on the schedule page with a confirmed date on your admit card.
Suggested Timeline
| When | What to do |
| Before registration opens | Check eligibility, get IBCC equivalence if needed, prepare scanned documents |
| Series 1 window | Register, pay fee, start revising HSSC textbooks |
| Between series | Analyse weak areas, decide on a retake |
| After final series | Watch for the application form, enter preferences |
| Merit rounds | Check lists, pay dues before the deadline |
FAQs
Can I take the NET more than once?
Yes. NUST states that candidates can appear more than once, with the best score considered (Source: https://ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk/). Within a single series you get one attempt per discipline.
Is the NET computer-based everywhere?
No. Islamabad and Quetta centres use the computer-based format, while Karachi and Gilgit use paper-based tests, according to the portal schedule.
What is the minimum percentage to apply?
More than 60% marks in SSC and HSSC or equivalent is listed as mandatory on the official merit criteria page (nust.edu.pk).
How much does NET registration cost?
The fee is published on a separate processing-fee page of the admissions portal. We do not reproduce figures that can change mid-cycle, so check the official website.
Do I need a separate application after the NET?
Yes. The NET is the test; the admission application, with program preferences, is a further step on the same portal after the series end.
