The Undergraduate Studies Admission Test (USAT) is a standardised test run by HEC’s Education Testing Council (ETC). It was created to give universities a common yardstick for admitting Intermediate graduates, but it has also caused confusion about whether it is compulsory, which category to choose and how it compares with NET, NAT or a university’s own test. This guide answers those questions using HEC’s official pages, including the ETC FAQs at hec.gov.pk and the ETC portal at etc.hec.gov.pk. For the degree you will enter after the test, read our HEC Undergraduate Education Guide — BS Degree Structure.
Is USAT Compulsory?
No. HEC has publicly clarified that USAT is optional for university admissions and that each university decides whether to use it (Source: https://www.hec.gov.pk/english/news/news/Pages/USAT-HEC.aspx). Universities such as NUST use their own NET, COMSATS relies on NTS NAT, and UAF conducts its own entry test. Some public universities, especially smaller ones, accept or require USAT scores in place of their own tests. The only reliable way to know is to read the admission advertisement of the university you are targeting; if it does not mention USAT, you do not need it for that university.

The FAQs show the category names only as an image, and the fee amount, test pattern and score validity are not stated on that page. HEC publishes a yearly ETC test calendar and a separate test-pattern document; check the official website for the current versions.
Choosing Your Category
USAT categories are aligned with Intermediate streams, in the same spirit as the NTS NAT categories described in our COMSATS NAT Guide — Which NAT Category Should You Take?. Candidates with a pre-engineering background take the engineering-stream paper, pre-medical students the medical-stream paper, and arts, commerce, computer science and general science students take their matching papers. Because the category is locked once chosen, decide carefully. If your A Level combination does not map cleanly, use your IBCC equivalence certificate to identify the nearest Intermediate group and, if still unsure, contact ETC before paying the fee.
Registration Steps
- Create an account on the ETC portal with your CNIC or B-Form number and an email address you control.
- Complete your profile with personal and academic details exactly as they appear on your documents.
- Select USAT and the category that matches your Intermediate stream in the current batch.
- Generate the consumer number and pay through 1Link or 1Bill from a bank app or branch.
- Wait for the roll number slip to appear on the portal and download it.
- Appear at the allotted centre with the slip and original ID, then collect your result from the portal when announced.
Batches open several times a year, so if you miss one window the next is usually within a few months. Track the ETC announcements page for dates.
Comparison: USAT vs Other Entry Tests
| Test | Run by | Used by | Attempts |
| USAT | HEC ETC | Universities that opt in | New batch each quarter |
| NET | NUST | NUST only | Multiple series, best score counts |
| NAT | NTS | COMSATS and others | Repeated sittings, higher score used at CUI |
| UAF entry test | UAF | UAF only | Several sittings per session |
Details for NET, NAT and UAF come from our dedicated guides: NUST Undergraduate Admission Guide — NET & Application Process, COMSATS Undergraduate Admission Guide — NAT & Merit and UAF Undergraduate Admission Guide — Entry Test & Merit. The practical takeaway is that most students applying to the three universities covered on this site will not need USAT, but a student aiming at a wider set of public universities may benefit from one USAT score that several of them accept.
Common Mistakes
- Paying for USAT without checking whether the target university accepts it.
- Choosing a category by intended degree rather than by Intermediate stream.
- Registering with a nickname or a spelling that differs from the CNIC.
- Missing the batch closing date and assuming a late fee option exists.
- Assuming a USAT score replaces NET at NUST or NAT at COMSATS; it does not.
Timeline and Preparation
Because the test runs in quarterly batches, plan around your target universities’ deadlines rather than the test itself. Register in the batch whose result will be out before the first admission closing date you care about. Preparation should mirror the shared skeleton of aptitude tests in Pakistan: English usage and comprehension, quantitative reasoning at Matric and Intermediate level, analytical reasoning, and the subject content of your stream. Content weightages per category are published in a separate HEC document; check the official website for it before you start revising.
