The University of Karachi (KU), established in 1951, is one of the largest public universities in Pakistan. Its sprawling campus hosts dozens of departments, and every year a very large number of intermediate students from Karachi and interior Sindh apply for its bachelor programmes. KU’s undergraduate admission system has two main routes: Open Merit and Test-Based. Understanding the difference between them is the first step to a successful application. This guide explains both routes, the faculties, the online portal and the payment process. For an overview of the university, read our University of Karachi profile.
Faculties at the University of Karachi
KU is organised into nine faculties, which together cover almost every academic field:
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Science
- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Management and Administrative Sciences
- Faculty of Pharmacy
- Faculty of Islamic Studies
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Education
- Faculty of Medicine
Whether you studied pre-medical, pre-engineering, computer science, commerce or arts at intermediate level, you will find relevant departments. Science and business departments tend to be the most competitive.
Open Merit vs Test-Based: What Is the Difference?
KU divides its bachelor programmes into two admission categories.
Open Merit programmes
In Open Merit departments, admission is decided purely on your academic record, mainly your HSSC marks, calculated according to the formula given in the prospectus. There is no entry test. Students apply online, and merit lists are prepared department by department. Your position depends on your percentage compared with other applicants, so a strong intermediate result is the key.
Test-Based programmes
Test-Based departments require applicants to sit a KU admission test in addition to meeting academic eligibility. These are usually the high-demand programmes in fields such as computer science, business and certain sciences. The final merit combines the test score with academic marks as specified in the prospectus. The university provides a sample BS test paper on the admission website so you can see the pattern of questions before the exam. Practising with that sample and with general aptitude material from our entry tests section is highly recommended.
The list of which departments fall under each route can change from year to year, so always check the current admission advertisement rather than relying on what a senior told you.
Separate Prospectuses: Pharm-D and Visual Studies
Two programmes at KU have their own separate prospectuses and admission procedures: Pharm-D in the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Visual Studies programme. If you are interested in either, do not assume the general BS instructions apply. Download the specific prospectus from the admission portal, as the eligibility conditions, test requirements and deadlines may differ from the main BS admission.
How to Apply Through the Online Portal
All applications are submitted through the official portal at uokadmission.edu.pk, where Admissions 2027 have been advertised. The process is fully online:
- Register on the portal with your email and mobile number.
- Read the prospectus carefully and decide whether your chosen departments are Open Merit or Test-Based.
- Fill in the form with your Matric and Intermediate details and select your preferred programmes in order of priority.
- Upload documents such as marks sheets, CNIC or B-Form, domicile and a photograph.
- Pay the fee through KuickPay using any bank app, mobile wallet or internet banking, and keep the transaction record.
- Download your admit card if you have applied for a Test-Based programme and note the test date.
Results and merit lists are announced on the portal. Follow our admissions page for reminders about key dates.
Fees and Payment
The University of Karachi collects admission processing fees and semester dues through KuickPay. The university does not publish a single fee figure that applies to all programmes, and the amounts for Morning and Evening programmes differ. For this reason we do not quote fee numbers here. Check the official admission website and the prospectus for the exact fee for your department before applying. As a public university, KU is generally more affordable than private institutions, and students with financial need can explore the options listed in our scholarships section.
Tips for a Strong Application
- Apply to a mix of Open Merit and Test-Based departments to increase your chances.
- Use our merit calculator to estimate your percentage and compare it with departments you are targeting.
- Download and attempt the sample BS test paper from the KU portal more than once to get used to the pattern.
- Fill in your programme preferences carefully; the order you choose can affect which department you are allotted.
- Keep your KuickPay receipt and application number safe until enrolment is complete.
