ECAT 2026-27 Complete Guide: Pattern, Syllabus and Preparation

ECAT guide for UET Lahore: official fee and dates, registration steps, syllabus, week-by-week preparation plan and exam day checklist.

If you plan to study engineering at UET Lahore or at any of the public-sector engineering universities in Punjab that accept its score, the ECAT (Engineering College Admission Test) is the paper that decides a big part of your merit. This guide collects what UET publishes on its official ECAT portal, explains how the test fits into the admission formula, and gives you a realistic week-by-week preparation plan built around the intermediate syllabus.

You will also find a registration walkthrough, an exam day checklist drawn directly from UET’s own instructions, and a list of mistakes that cost students marks every year. Where the official portal does not state a figure, we say so, and you should confirm it on ecat.uet.edu.pk before you act.

What ECAT Is and Who Needs It

ECAT is conducted by the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. It is used for admission to BSc Engineering and related undergraduate programmes at UET Lahore and its sub-campuses, and several other Punjab engineering institutions accept the score as their entry test. Students from other provinces who want a UET Lahore seat also sit this test. If you are still deciding between the engineering, NUST and general-purpose tests, read ECAT vs NET vs NAT first.

UET held two ECAT sittings for Fall 2026, labelled ECAT I and ECAT II, and published statistics for both on the portal. The portal for the second sitting listed a fee of Rs. 3000, a last date of 13 June 2026 for generating the challan and submitting the form, admit card printing from the evening of 24 June 2026 and a result date of 30 June 2026. Source: https://ecat.uet.edu.pk. The 2027 cycle will have its own dates, so treat these as a pattern, not a promise.

Test Pattern and Syllabus

The official ECAT portal does not publish the question breakdown as plain text; the key figures sit in an image titled Important. Historically, the test has been a multiple-choice paper built on the Punjab intermediate textbooks for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry (or Computer Science for pre-engineering students who studied it), and English, with negative marking for wrong answers. Because the exact count of MCQs, marks per question and the penalty can change between cycles, check the official website for the current year’s pattern before fixing your strategy.

How to use the syllabus

  • Work from the FSc Part I and Part II textbooks of your board; the test is designed around them, not around academy notes.
  • Give Mathematics the largest share of time, as it is the section students most often run out of time on.
  • For Physics, memorise units, formulas and the standard numericals from each chapter’s exercise.
  • For Chemistry, focus on reaction mechanisms, periodic trends and organic naming.
  • English is usually vocabulary, grammar and sentence correction; a daily 15-minute habit is enough.

How ECAT Fits Into Your Merit

UET combines the entry test score with your matric and intermediate marks to produce an aggregate. The weightages are published in the UET prospectus each year and are not printed on the ECAT portal, so read our UET Lahore admission guide and how university merit is calculated to see how a few extra ECAT marks move you across the merit list. The important point is that ECAT is the only component you can still improve after your intermediate result, which is why it deserves disciplined preparation.

Registration: Step by Step

  1. Open ecat.uet.edu.pk and create an account during the registration window.
  2. Generate the fee challan or token online (Rs. 3000 in the 2026 cycle; source: ecat.uet.edu.pk) and pay it through the channel the portal names.
  3. Fill in the application form with your matric and intermediate details exactly as they appear on your certificates.
  4. Upload a clear photograph and the ID document the portal asks for.
  5. Submit before the deadline; in 2026 both the token and form deadline fell on the same day, so do not leave the form for later.
  6. Download and print your admit card when printing opens, and read the venue, date and time on it.

Preparation Plan

This eight-week plan assumes you have finished your intermediate exams and can give about four hours a day. Adjust the subject order if Computer Science replaces Chemistry for you.

WeekFocusDaily target
1Mathematics Part I: functions, matrices, sequences, trigonometry basicsTwo chapters revised, 40 MCQs
2Mathematics Part II: limits, differentiation, integration, vectorsTwo chapters revised, 40 MCQs
3Physics Part I: mechanics, waves, thermodynamics numericalsFormula sheet plus 40 MCQs
4Physics Part II: electricity, magnetism, modern physicsFormula sheet plus 40 MCQs
5Chemistry (or Computer Science) Part I and II: reactions, periodic table, organicTwo chapters, 40 MCQs
6English: vocabulary lists, grammar rules, sentence correction; mixed revision20 words, 30 MCQs
7Full-length timed practice papers, one every second day; error log reviewOne paper or error review
8Light revision of weak chapters only, sleep schedule fixed to the test slotError log and formulas

Keep an error log from week one: every wrong MCQ goes in with the chapter name and the reason. By week seven that log, not a new book, is your syllabus.

Exam Day Checklist

  • Printed admit card or roll number slip (plus a second copy on your phone, though you may not be allowed to use the phone inside)
  • Original CNIC, B-Form or the ID document named on your admit card
  • Two or three blue or black ballpoint pens; no calculators or notes unless the admit card says otherwise
  • Reach the centre well before the reporting time printed on your slip
  • Light breakfast and a bottle of water for the waiting area, as food is usually not allowed inside the hall
  • Confirm the exact venue a day earlier; many centres are on large campuses and the block number matters
  • Leave mobile phones, smartwatches and bags with a family member or at the designated counter
  • UET asks candidates to arrive at least 30 minutes before the test and accepts CNIC, passport, Matric or First Year certificate or domicile as photo ID; calculators, books, notes, mobile phones and handbags are not allowed, rough paper is provided and only a simple ballpoint pen may be brought. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Paying the challan but forgetting to submit the form; the portal treats these as two separate steps with the same deadline.
  • Guessing freely when negative marking applies; leave a question blank if you cannot eliminate at least two options.
  • Preparing from academy notes while ignoring the exercise questions in the textbook.
  • Not checking which sitting (ECAT I or ECAT II) your target university accepts.
  • Arriving at the wrong campus block; UET is large and the admit card names the exact venue.
  • Ignoring English because it looks easy; it is often the difference between two close aggregates.

FAQs

Can I take ECAT more than once?

UET announced two sittings in the Fall 2026 cycle (ECAT I and ECAT II). Whether both are offered again, and which score counts, is decided each year, so check the official website for the current policy.

Is there negative marking in ECAT?

Negative marking has been a feature of the test in past years, but the exact penalty is published in the pattern notice on the official portal for each cycle. Confirm it there before you decide your guessing strategy.

What ID can I bring on test day?

According to the official portal, UET accepts a CNIC, passport, Matric or First Year certificate, or domicile as an original photo ID along with the admit card. Source: https://ecat.uet.edu.pk.

Do other universities accept the ECAT score?

Several public-sector engineering universities and sub-campuses in Punjab accept it. Each university states this in its own admission notice, so verify on the university’s admission page and on our entry tests archive.

What was the ECAT fee in 2026?

The portal listed Rs. 3000 for the Fall 2026 second sitting. Source: https://ecat.uet.edu.pk. The fee for 2027 may differ.
