BS Bioinformatics at the NUST university profile is an undergraduate degree run by the School of Interdisciplinary Engineering and Sciences (SINES) at the H-12 campus in Islamabad. The official programme list places it under SINES rather than the Atta-ur-Rahman School of Applied Biosciences, and for admission purposes NUST groups it with the Computing discipline.

Program Overview

Bioinformatics sits at the junction of biology, computing and statistics. Students learn molecular biology and genetics alongside programming, databases, algorithms and statistical modelling, and then apply these tools to genome sequencing data, protein structure, drug discovery and systems biology. The programme suits students from the Pre-Medical stream who enjoy computing, as well as Pre-Engineering or ICS students who are curious about life sciences, and it is a natural feeder into MS and PhD research at SINES and ASAB.

Eligibility Criteria

NUST lists BS Bioinformatics with the Computing programmes for eligibility: 60% or more in Matric and 60% or more in HSSC, with the HSSC group being Pre-Engineering, Computer Science, Pre-Medical, or any HSSC with Mathematics as a mandatory subject. Pre-Medical candidates are admitted without additional mathematics but must clear 6 credit hours of deficient Mathematics courses within one year. Admission Process

  1. Apply for NET on ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk under the Computing group.
  2. Pay the test processing fee and attempt the computer-based NET; multiple attempts are allowed across series.
  3. Submit the admission form with BS Bioinformatics at SINES among your preferences.
  4. Monitor merit lists; selected candidates pay the admission fee and first-semester dues and submit documents.

Admission is through the NUST Entry Test (NET), a computer-based test held at the H-12 campus in Islamabad and at NBC Quetta (paper-based sittings are held in Karachi and Gilgit). For the Fall 2027 intake the official portal lists NET Series 1 registration from 4 October to 14 November 2026 with tests starting 17 November 2026, followed by further series through mid-2027; candidates may sit more than once and the best score counts. Applicants with ACT or SAT scores can also apply on that basis. Source: https://ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk/. Read our NUST entry test (NET) page for subject weightings.

Fee Structure

According to the official “Undergraduate Financial Matters” page for session 2026-27, the tuition fee for Engineering, Computing, Natural Sciences and Applied Sciences programmes is Rs. 216,750 per semester for national students, with a one-time non-refundable admission processing fee of Rs. 35,000, a refundable security deposit of Rs. 10,000 and miscellaneous charges of Rs. 5,000 per semester for sports, library, health and IT. The university states that all fees are subject to revision. Source: https://nust.edu.pk/admissions/fee-structure/undergraduate-financial-matters/. Need-based financial aid, fee deferment and interest-free loans are described on the NUST scholarships page.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Bioinformatics graduates in Pakistan work in genomics and diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical research, agricultural biotechnology institutes, public-health data units and the growing number of health-tech start-ups. The combination of coding and biology also makes them competitive for research scholarships abroad, and many SINES graduates continue to postgraduate study. Pure industry demand is smaller than for general software roles, so students who keep their programming skills sharp have the widest options.
