Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad lists a BS Software Engineering among the undergraduate programs for which Fall 2026 merit lists were issued on its official merit-list portal. It is a four-year degree in the computing family at a federal public university regarded as Pakistan’s leading general university.

Program Overview

Software engineering differs from computer science in its emphasis on building large software systems reliably: requirements engineering, software design and architecture, construction, testing and quality assurance, project management and DevOps practice, on top of the shared programming, data structures, databases and operating systems core. It suits students who want to work in software teams and product companies rather than in theory or research. Note that the QAU Fall 2026 central admission notice for BS programs did not list BS Software Engineering by name, while the merit-list portal shows three Fall 2026 lists for it (the third dated 12 October 2026); the program therefore appears to be offered, but its curriculum and department pages could not be confirmed on the official site as of October 2026. Confirm details at lists.qau.edu.pk and qau.edu.pk.

Eligibility Criteria

QAU’s general requirement for BS programs in the Faculty of Natural Sciences is at least 50% marks in HSSC Part I; the computer science entry requires FA/FSc or equivalent with Mathematics (Pre-Medical with Additional Mathematics), and the same Mathematics requirement should be expected for software engineering. QAU does not hold an entry test for BS programs; merit is FA/FSc Part I 70% and SSC 30%. Verify the program-specific criteria on the official notice: QAU Fall 2026 undergraduate admissions.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Software engineering graduates are the core hiring pool for Pakistan’s software export industry, and Islamabad hosts many of its largest firms along with telecom operators and government digitisation projects. Typical first roles are software engineer, full-stack developer, QA automation engineer, DevOps engineer and business analyst, and the QAU name helps with shortlisting at competitive employers and for postgraduate admission.
