The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) is a federally chartered public-sector university located in Nilore, on the outskirts of Islamabad. It grew out of the Reactor School set up in 1967 and was granted degree-awarding status in 2000. PIEAS is one of the few Pakistani universities built around nuclear and applied sciences, and its small, selective BS intake, residential campus and strong placement of graduates in public-sector technical organisations make it a different proposition from the big general universities covered in our universities archive.

Faculties and Undergraduate Programs
PIEAS keeps its undergraduate offering deliberately narrow. According to the official BS information leaflet, the following four-year BS programs are offered:
- BS Electrical Engineering
- BS Mechanical Engineering
- BS Chemical Engineering
- BS Metallurgy & Materials Engineering
- BS Computer and Information Sciences
- BS Physics
Postgraduate work (MS and PhD) spans nuclear engineering, medical physics, systems engineering, process engineering and computing, which is where much of the institute’s research reputation comes from. Source: PIEAS BS information leaflet.
Admission Process
PIEAS admits BS students once a year for the fall session. The official schedule for the 2026 cycle shows a two-test system: a first written test held in April across 18 cities and a second written test held in July in six cities. Applicants may sit either or both; the better result counts. The sequence runs roughly like this:
- Online application opens on the admissions portal in early February.
- Apply for the first test (deadline late March) and/or the second test (deadline end of June).
- Download the admit slip about a week before the test date.
- Sit the written test; results are posted on the portal.
- Merit numbers are announced in July and candidates update degree preferences online.
- Up to seven merit lists are released between late July and early September.
- Selected candidates join PIEAS in early September.
The admission application fee for 2026 is Rs. 3,500 (Rs. 4,000 with late fee). Source: PIEAS Fee Structure 2026. Full dates are in the PIEAS admissions 2026-27.
Entry Test and Merit
PIEAS conducts its own written test; there is no NTS or HEC test route for domestic applicants, and the leaflet states that there is no reserved seat or quota for any category. The test is MCQ-based and covers Physics, Mathematics and either Chemistry or Computer Science. The leaflet gives the written test a 60% weight in merit, with SSC and HSSC contributing the remainder, although the published weightage lines are ambiguous, so confirm the exact split with the admissions office. A small number of seats are filled on SAT II (minimum 2000) or ACT (minimum 25 composite) scores, mainly for overseas Pakistanis. See the PIEAS entry test guide for pattern and preparation.
Fee Structure
PIEAS publishes a single fee table that applies to all programs from Fall 2026. Source: https://admissions.pieas.edu.pk/Admissions/Contents/FeeStructure2026.pdf.
| Admission charges (one-time) | Rs. 35,000 |
| University security (refundable) | Rs. 25,000 |
| Tuition fee | Rs. 4,000 per credit hour (about 18 credit hours per BS semester, Rs. 72,000) |
| IT services per regular semester | Rs. 15,000–16,000 |
| Hostel accommodation per month | Rs. 3,000 (dormitory) to Rs. 13,500 (single, attached bath) |
| Example BS semester total (no hostel/transport) | Rs. 103,000 |
Scholarships and Financial Aid
The official leaflet lists a need-based tuition fee waiver, subject to satisfactory academic performance, administered through the financial aid office. Students from Balochistan and the former FATA may be admitted under HEC policy but receive no automatic fee waiver; needy students apply for the waiver like everyone else. Some public-sector technical organisations sponsor students and offer employment after graduation. Campuses
PIEAS operates from a single residential campus at Nilore, Islamabad. It has no sub-campuses; the second written test is simply held at centres in six cities for convenience. Browse other options in the campuses archive.
Why Students Choose PIEAS
Students pick PIEAS for its small class sizes, a residential campus with a research-lab culture, and the link between its programs and public-sector technical employers. The trade-off is a very competitive single-cycle admission and a limited menu of six BS programs. Compare it with NUST and UET Lahore before deciding.
