Since HEC introduced its Undergraduate Education Policy, every four-year BS degree in Pakistan is expected to follow a shared skeleton: a fixed band of credit hours, a general education core, a declared major, practical learning and an internship. Understanding this structure helps you compare programs honestly, plan electives and avoid surprises in your third semester. This guide summarises the official overview at hec.gov.pk, explains each component, and shows how universities such as COMSATS, NUST and UAF implement it.
Quick Facts: The HEC BS Framework
| Element | HEC requirement |

| Major | At least 39 credits; declared in the third semester |
| Distribution requirement | At least 18 credits from department-approved courses |
| Minor (optional) | At least 12 credits |
| Practical learning labs | Non-credit, 3 to 4 hours per week for 3 to 4 semesters |
| Internship | 6 to 9 weeks |

The overview page we checked did not spell out the capstone project or the associate degree exit option; those appear in the fuller policy document and in individual university handbooks, so check the official website for the current text.
General Education: The First Two Semesters
HEC wants every graduate, whether in engineering or sociology, to share a common foundation. The 39-credit general education block covers expository writing, quantitative reasoning, natural and social sciences, arts and humanities, Islamiat (or an alternative for non-Muslim students), Pakistan Studies and civic engagement. At least 10 of the 13 courses must be taken in the first two semesters, while Islamiat, Pakistan Studies and the third writing course may be scheduled later. COMSATS, for example, requires all general education courses to be completed within the first four semesters, as its Undergraduate Guide states.
Declaring a Major and Choosing a Minor
Under the policy, initial admission is to a university, faculty or school, and the department admits you to a specific major usually in the third semester. In practice most Pakistani universities still admit directly into a program such as BS Computer Science, but the HEC framework preserves the idea that a student can shift within a faculty early on. The major requires at least 39 credits of specialised courses. A minor of at least 12 credits is optional and is a sensible way to add data science to a business degree or economics to a CS degree. Ask the department which minors are actually offered, because availability varies widely.
Practical Learning, Internship and Capstone
- Practical learning labs: non-credit activities for 3 to 4 hours a week over 3 to 4 semesters, meant to build skills outside the lecture hall.
- Internship: a supervised placement of 6 to 9 weeks, normally in the summer after the fourth semester.
- Capstone or final year project: a substantial project in the final year that integrates the major; the exact credit value is set by each university.
These components are where employers look first. Treat the internship as a job audition rather than a form-filling exercise, keep a record of your work, and choose a capstone topic that produces something you can show in an interview.
Comparison: How Universities Apply the Framework
| University | Typical BS length | Notable implementation detail |
| COMSATS (CUI) | 8 to 12 semesters | General education within first four semesters; 6 to 8 week internship after semester four |
| NUST | 8 semesters | Program-specific credit plans; see university handbook |
| UAF | 8 semesters | Agriculture programs include field internship components |
COMSATS details come from its Undergraduate Guide 2025-26 (PDF); for NUST and UAF specifics, consult the program handbook on the official website.
Common Misunderstandings
- Thinking general education courses are filler. They are credit-bearing and affect your CGPA just like core courses.
- Assuming you can defer all general education to later years; most must be done in the first two to four semesters.
- Confusing a minor with an elective; a minor is a structured set of at least 12 credits.
- Expecting the internship to be arranged entirely by the university; students usually have to find placements with department support.
- Planning for 120 credits when your program requires up to 135; check your program’s own scheme of studies.
Planning Timeline for a BS Student
Semesters one and two: complete most general education, settle study habits, explore faculty options. Semester three: declare the major, map remaining requirements against the 120 to 135 credit band. Semester four summer: internship. Semesters five and six: major depth, start a minor if desired. Semesters seven and eight: capstone, remaining electives, graduate school or job applications. FAQs
How many credit hours is a BS degree in Pakistan?
HEC specifies 120 to 135 credits, usually 40 to 45 three-credit courses (Source: hec.gov.pk).
When do I declare my major?
The HEC framework places departmental admission and major declaration in the third semester, although many universities admit directly into a program.
Is the internship compulsory?
Yes. The policy lists a 6 to 9 week internship as part of the degree; universities set the exact timing.
Can I leave after two years with an associate degree?
The policy document discusses an associate degree route; the overview page did not state exit conditions, so check the official website and your university’s rules.
Do general education courses count toward CGPA?
Yes. They are credit courses and are graded like any other, unlike the non-credit practical learning labs.
