Almost every university in Pakistan now accepts undergraduate applications only through an online portal; UET Lahore, for example, states that postal, courier and hand-delivered forms are not accepted (Source: https://admission.uet.edu.pk/program/1). The portals are not difficult, but each has its own sequence of account creation, fee challan, form submission and document verification, and a mistake at any step can silently remove you from the merit list.
This guide walks through the general process that applies to nearly all portals and then shows how four major universities actually do it: NUST, the University of the Punjab, UET Lahore and the University of Karachi. All details are taken from the official portals and regulations and cited with their source. Dates and fees change each cycle, so use this as a map and confirm the current figures on the official website before you pay anything.
Before You Open Any Portal
- A working email address you check daily and a mobile number registered in your own or a parent’s name.
- Scanned copies of your CNIC or B-Form, matric and intermediate result cards or certificates, domicile and a recent passport-size photograph with a plain background.
- Exact spellings of your name and your father’s name as printed on your matric certificate.
- A way to pay: a bank branch, mobile banking with 1Link or 1Bill, or Kuickpay, depending on the university.
- The application deadline and entry test date written in your calendar.
Our documents checklist lists everything you may be asked for, and the admission calendar shows when each university typically opens.
The Generic Online Application Flow
- Create an account on the portal with your email, CNIC and mobile number, then confirm the email link.
- Fill in your personal profile and education records exactly as on your certificates.
- Choose your programmes and campuses in order of preference.
- Generate the fee challan or voucher and pay it through the method the portal lists.
- Upload required documents and submit the form; many portals lock the form after final submission.
- Register for the entry test if the university requires one, and print the admit card.
- Track your application status, respond to any document discrepancy, and check merit lists on the dates announced.
- If selected, pay admission dues within the deadline and complete enrolment, usually with original documents in person.
Example 1: NUST (ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk)
NUST admits most undergraduates through its own test, the NET. According to its official procedure, you register at ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk with a valid email and receive a password, complete the online form, and upload a recent passport-size photograph not more than one month old with a plain background. You then print the fee invoice from the My Account page and pay the processing fee by 1Link or credit card; 1Link payments are verified instantly. For the computer-based NET you choose a test date and session and receive your roll number and centre details; paper-based sessions are allocated first come, first served. You may sit the NET more than once and NUST uses your best score for merit. After the merit list you can review your programme preferences and may request one change of preference on the prescribed form (Source: https://nust.edu.pk/admissions/undergraduates/procedure-of-admission-on-the-basis-of-net/). The processing fee amount is not stated on that page, so check the portal. Our NUST merit guide and the NUST entry test page explain the rest.
Example 2: University of the Punjab
Punjab University’s admission regulations describe an online submission in which you fill the form, generate an online bank challan during submission, pay the processing and examination fee of Rs. 2000 at HBL, UBL or by mobile banking through 1Bill, enter the payment details in the application, and then generate the final application to complete the submission. Late applications are not accepted. The regulations also state that the entry test is mandatory for BS programmes, that most BS programmes weight the academic record at 75 percent and the entry test at 25 percent, and that candidates must not be older than 24 years on the last date for applications (Source: https://pu.edu.pk/puac/download/Admission-Regulations-Book.pdf). These regulations are the 2024-25 edition; confirm the current fee and formula on the PU admissions portal. See the University of the Punjab profile for links.
Example 3: UET Lahore (admission.uet.edu.pk)
UET Lahore’s portal makes the challan the first step: you generate and pay a challan of Rs. 3,000, and the challan number serves as your token for the entry test. One fee covers multiple programmes and is non-refundable. You then log in, submit the online application and rank your programme and campus preferences, with each programme counting as a separate preference and the order mattering. UET advises applicants to monitor the application status regularly, because the university may reject an application over document discrepancies. Selected candidates download an offer letter, report to the designated centre with original documents, pay the fee challan and collect an admission receipt. For Fall 2026 the online submission window ran from 8 June to mid-July 2026, with a preference change window of 12 to 14 July and a preference change fee of Rs. 1,500 (Source: https://admission.uet.edu.pk/program/1). Read our UET Lahore admission guide and the UET Lahore entry test page for ECAT details.
Example 4: University of Karachi (uokadmission.edu.pk)
The University of Karachi portal is built around your CNIC. You create one account with your name, father’s name, email, CNIC or B-Form, mobile number, photo and password, confirm your email, and then sign in with your CNIC rather than your email. Names must match your matric certificate exactly. You complete your profile and education records, fill a form with departmental preferences in order, generate a voucher and pay through Kuickpay; the fee is non-refundable and payment updates take one to two working days. Final submission locks the form. The form is then marked approved, short of documents or cancelled; if documents are missing you receive an SMS and can upload them. Seats are allotted by preference order and a seat is confirmed only by paying the enrolment voucher and completing enrolment (Source: https://uokadmission.edu.pk/faqs). The fee amount is not stated on the FAQ page, so check the voucher. See the University of Karachi profile.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| University | Portal | First step | Payment method stated | Entry test |
| NUST | ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk | Register with email, fill form, upload photo | 1Link or credit card | NET (best of multiple attempts) |
| University of the Punjab | PU online admissions | Fill form, generate challan | HBL, UBL or 1Bill mobile banking | PU entry test (25 percent in most BS programmes) |
| UET Lahore | admission.uet.edu.pk | Generate and pay Rs. 3,000 challan | Bank challan | ECAT for engineering, computing, architecture |
| University of Karachi | uokadmission.edu.pk | Create account with CNIC and confirm email | Kuickpay | Varies by programme |
After You Submit: Tracking, Merit Lists and Enrolment
Log in every few days to check the status, respond immediately to any document query, and note the merit list dates. Lists are published in rounds, so you may be selected later as seats are vacated. When you are selected, the admission or enrolment fee deadline is strict: NUST states that candidates who fail to deposit admission dues within the given time are not considered further (Source: https://nust.edu.pk/admissions/undergraduates/procedure-of-admission-on-the-basis-of-net/), and Karachi University reminds applicants that a seat is confirmed by enrolling, not merely by being admitted (Source: https://uokadmission.edu.pk/faqs). Our merit calculation guide explains how to estimate your position.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Registering twice with different emails or CNIC details. Karachi University explicitly asks for one account per candidate; duplicate accounts cause verification problems.
- Typing your name or father’s name differently from your matric certificate.
- Paying the challan but not entering the payment details or not completing final submission.
- Listing only one or two preferences, which removes you from consideration for other programmes you would have accepted.
- Ignoring the status page and missing a document discrepancy notice.
- Treating the merit list as the final step and missing the enrolment fee deadline.
FAQs
Can I apply to several universities at the same time?
Yes. Each university has its own portal and processing fee, and there is no central limit on the number of applications. Apply to a safe, a realistic and an ambitious option, keeping a record of each login and deadline.
What if I made a mistake in my submitted form?
Most portals lock the form after final submission. UET Lahore offers a paid preference change window, Karachi University allows the admissions office to correct names, and NUST allows one change of preference on the prescribed form. For anything else, contact the admissions office in writing as soon as possible.
Do I need to send documents by post?
Generally no. Portals ask for uploads, and originals are verified in person at the time of admission. UET Lahore does not accept postal or hand-delivered applications at all.
How do I pay the application fee from a village without a nearby bank?
Most portals now accept mobile banking: NUST lists 1Link and credit cards, Punjab University lists 1Bill mobile banking alongside HBL and UBL, and Karachi University uses Kuickpay. Any family member with a mobile banking app can usually pay using the voucher number.
When do online applications usually open?
Most fall admissions open between May and August, and UET Lahore’s Fall 2026 window opened in early June. Check the official admissions page of each university and our month-by-month calendar, because dates shift every year.
