King Edward Medical University Lahore

KEMU Lahore profile: MBBS via UHS, AHS, DPT and nursing programs, admission process, merit formula, fees and scholarships.

King Edward Medical University (KEMU) is a public sector medical university in Lahore, Punjab, and the direct successor of King Edward Medical College, one of the oldest medical schools in South Asia. The college traces its origins to the 1860s (its own records list MBBS graduates from 1865 onward) and was upgraded to university status by the Government of Punjab in 2005. KEMU is attached to Mayo Hospital Lahore and a group of allied teaching hospitals, and it is widely regarded as the most sought-after public MBBS seat in Punjab. It also runs Allied Health Sciences (AHS), Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Allied Vision Sciences and nursing programmes on its own campus. This profile covers what the university teaches, how undergraduate admission works, and where to look for fees. For the test itself read the KEMU entry test page, and for the live cycle see the KEMU admissions 2026-27 record.

Admission Process

There are two very different routes into KEMU, and students often confuse them.

  1. MBBS: KEMU does not run its own MBBS admission. The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore is the admitting university for all public sector medical and dental colleges of Punjab, including KEMU. Candidates sit MDCAT, then apply once on the UHS public MBBS/BDS portal and list KEMU among their college preferences. Seats are allotted by a province-wide merit list. See the UHS Lahore profile.
  2. AHS, DPT, AVS and Post RN BSN: KEMU advertises these itself, usually around October–November, with applications on its own admissions page and merit lists published on the KEMU website. Foreign and overseas applicants are routed through the Economic Affairs Division.

The university publishes a processing fee in each year’s advertisement — check the official website for the current amount.

Entry Test and Merit

MDCAT, conducted under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), is the test for MBBS and also for KEMU’s AHS and DPT programmes. For AHS and DPT, KEMU publishes the merit formula as: Matric 10% + FSc 45% + MDCAT 45%. DPT requires at least 60% in Matric, FSc (Pre-Medical) and the latest MDCAT; AHS requires 60% in Matric, 65% in FSc and a passing MDCAT, with Punjab domicile. KEMU states last year’s closing DPT aggregate as 92.69. Source: https://kemu.edu.pk/undergraduates-admissions/. The MBBS merit formula is set by UHS in the annual admission policy. Full detail is on the KEMU entry test page.

Fee Structure

KEMU hosts a fee-structure page with a separate fee schedule for MBBS and one for all other programmes (the most recent documents shown are for session 2023-24). The amounts are inside those PDFs and are revised by the Punjab Health Department, so we do not quote them here — check the official website: https://kemu.edu.pk/fee-structure/.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The university has a scholarships page and circulates the HEC Need Based Scholarship (the 2026 round was advertised in July 2026 with an extended deadline). Punjab Government schemes such as the CM Punjab student e-bike initiative have also been notified to KEMU students. Source: https://kemu.edu.pk/scholarships/. Campuses

KEMU has a single main campus on Nila Gumbad, Anarkali, Lahore, next to Mayo Hospital. Its clinical teaching is spread across affiliated hospitals including Mayo Hospital, Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lady Aitchison Hospital and the Punjab Institute of Mental Health. No sub-campus is listed on the official website.

Why Students Choose KEMU

KEMU is the first choice on most Punjab MBBS preference lists because of its history, the size of Mayo Hospital as a teaching ground, and a strong alumni network at home and abroad. Its AHS and DPT programmes give pre-medical students who narrowly miss MBBS a respected public sector alternative in central Lahore. We do not cite rankings unless the university publishes them.
