Rawalpindi Medical University

Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) is a public sector medical university in Rawalpindi, Punjab. It began life as Rawalpindi Medical College in 1974 and was upgraded to a university by the Punjab Government in 2017. Its teaching hospitals — Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital and the District Headquarters Hospital — give it one of the largest clinical footprints in northern Punjab. Besides MBBS, RMU runs a growing list of Allied Health Sciences degrees and a BS Nursing programme, and it is a major centre for MS/MD residency training. Faculties and Undergraduate Programs

The official website states “14+ UG programs”, “29+ MS/MD programs” and “06+ PhD programs”. Undergraduate study falls into three families (Source: https://www.rmur.edu.pk/):

MBBS — admitted centrally by UHS Lahore for public colleges of Punjab
Allied Health Sciences (AHS) — four-year BS degrees in medical technologies (the specific streams are listed in the RMU prospectus)
BS Nursing (generic) through the RMU nursing college

Postgraduate options include MS/MD, MPhil, PhD, MHPE, diplomas and certificate courses, plus the RMU Residency Programme.

Admission Process

MBBS: after MDCAT, apply on the UHS public sector portal and include RMU in your preference order. RMU’s homepage carried a notice on 16 October 2026 that the MBBS & BDS portal has opened. RMU does not accept direct MBBS applications. See the UHS profile.
AHS and BS Nursing: RMU advertises its own admission, usually after MDCAT results in the autumn, with applications through the RMU website and merit lists posted online.
Postgraduate: separate notices; the session 2027-28 postgraduate notice is already on the homepage.

Entry Test and Merit

MDCAT (PM&DC) is required for MBBS and, in line with other Punjab public universities, for AHS. The MBBS merit is calculated by UHS under the 2026-27 admission policy. RMU’s own AHS and nursing merit formula is in its prospectus — check the official website. More on the RMU entry test page.

Fee Structure

Campuses

RMU has its main academic campus on Tipu Road, Rawalpindi (the old Rawalpindi Medical College site) and a new campus near Holy Family Hospital. Clinical training is at Holy Family, Benazir Bhutto and DHQ hospitals. No separate city sub-campus is listed.

Why Students Choose RMU

RMU is usually the second or third preference on Punjab MBBS forms after KEMU and Allama Iqbal Medical College, valued for three large teaching hospitals and a busy residency programme. Its AHS and nursing degrees are an affordable public sector route for Rawalpindi–Islamabad students who want to stay close to home. We do not quote rankings unless the university publishes them.
